Celebrated designers set to teach University's fashion students

'Be brave' is the message to fashion students from Buckinghamshire New University's newest lecturers Jane Bowler and David Hopwood.

The celebrated fashion designers will be joining the BA (Hons) Fashion Design course this month and both are hoping to bring fresh ideas and experience to the roles. Jane-Bowler-article

Luxury fashion and textile designer Jane, who runs her own label, will be course leader and already runs workshops at the prestigious V&A Museum and from her London studio.

She said: "Teaching is definitely a passion of mine, it's another way of being creative. There will be times in my studio where I'll feel really unmotivated but then I'll go and teach some students who are really passionate. So it works both ways, we inspire each other."

Driven by a passion for process, materials and craftsmanship, Jane's studio creates constructed textiles which evolve into what she refers to as 'wearable art'. Her work has been featured in some of the world's most respected publications.

David-Hopwood-articleFashion designer David Hopwood studied at the Royal College of Art and has a solid knowledge of the fashion industry both in London and Europe.

David, a self-confessed 'clothes geek', continues to works on several niche projects with other artists and designers outside of teaching at Bucks New University. But he's no stranger to lecturing having also worked at University of Brighton, Southampton Solent University and Bournemouth University.

He said: "Teaching taught me to like things I may have normally dismissed straight away, it's made me more open. I advise students to be brave, work hard and never assume that everything will happen in a linear direction, be prepared for change."

David and Jane already have an exciting program planned for the year including a showcase in London's Brick Lane for final year fashion students.

Rosie Cate, senior lecturer in Textiles and Surface Design, said: "We are delighted to welcome Jane and David, they both bring a wealth of experience and retain strong links within the fashion industry. As well as being creative fashion experts, they are driven educators with an international network of contacts and design experience."
