Nursing lecturer Dr Sharon Edwards collects teaching award

A top nursing lecturer has said she is 'humbled and honoured' to have become part of the National Teaching Fellowship (NTF) with the Higher Education Academy.

Buckinghamshire New University's Dr Sharon Edwards, senior lecturer in Pre-Qualifying Nursing, attended an awards ceremony in London at the end of last month.Dr Sharon Edwards, senior lecturer in Pre-Qualifying Nursing.

Sharon, who has taught at the university for 11 years based at the Uxbridge Campus, believes student learning is a collaboration and supports learning by using students' own stories of clinical practice.

To gain the accolade, Sharon had to show evidence in three criteria: individual excellence, raising the profile of excellence and developing excellence.

She said: "I like to think that I make a difference. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a teacher and am very proud to receive this award for my work as a senior lecturer. More work needs to be done, and with this award I will continue to champion that all students need the opportunity to learn and fulfil their potential, and this can be achieved if they are taught well.

"I greatly humbled and honoured to be a part of the NTF community. My main prize is being a teacher. To be a part of, and help students on, their educational journey is sufficient reward."

Sharon said the awards ceremony, held on 25 January at Merchant Taylors' in London, was 'amazing' and it was a privilege to walk alongside her fellow NTF award winners.

She added: "The ceremony made me feel special but the award I was receiving was bigger than me."

Bucks New University is the only UK university to combine moulage with 'live' and state-of-the-art simulation laboratories equipped with manikins as 'patients', which can be programmed to recreate real-life medical situations.

It was this work which won a team of lecturers the Guardian Education award in Teaching Excellence. Sharon was also a finalist for the Student Nursing Times 'Educator of the year' award and nominated for a Bucks Students' Union award for 'Excellence and Innovation in Learning and Teaching Practice'.
