A Buckinghamshire New University graduate presented with a prize for his entrepreneurial skills hopes that his eye for an opportunity will help him make his mark in business.
Sander Saar graduated with a 2:1 in BA (Hons) Business and Digital Media Communications at a ceremony at the Wycombe Swan Theatre in High Wycombe on Wednesday 5 September 2012.
The full-of-ideas graduate, who is originally from Tallinn, in Estonia, was also presented with a prize as Most Enterprising Student by Hewlett Packard (HP), a partner of Bucks New University.
Sander’s achievements at the University included gaining first prize in the visual category of a competition called the Bucks Creative Talent Showcase with a documentary about design processes, and winning a competition to make a video showcasing the University’s library. He won enterprise competitions every year he was at the University.
His previous achievements included being part of a team, when he was aged just 15, who came second in a Europe-wide competition called the European Student Company of the Year Competition, making wallets out of empty, used juice cartons.
Sander’s most recent achievements include working as a camera operator for Estonian broadcaster ETV at the London 2012 Olympics, interviewing Estonian Olympians including Heiki Nabi, who won a silver medal in the Men's Greco-Roman Wrestling 120kg class.
Sander is hoping to catch the eye of employers with an interactive video CV he has recorded and uploaded to the Internet. He said: “I think it is important to take part in all kinds of competitions and challenges to develop yourself and have something on your CV to get yourself noticed.
“I am very proud to be recognised for the enterprising activities I have been involved in. It is certainly something I have been publicising ever since hearing I won!
“Being involved in entrepreneurial activities has helped me meet people outside the University and develop contacts that I hope will stand me in good stead.
“I hadn’t originally wanted to go to University but I’m pleased I chose Bucks New University as it was forward-thinking, dynamic and moved with the times. I now feel well-equipped to enter the world of work and graduating was a very proud day. The award was the icing on the cake!”
Sander says he is passionate about digital media, marketing and technologies, and hopes to enter a career in a company’s marketing department or in creative strategy for an agency. He added: “I am very excited about what the future holds.”
Nick Wilson, vice president and managing director, HP UK and Ireland, said: “Enterprise and entrepreneurial skills make a real positive difference to employability potential as new graduates enter the workplace.
“Sander has consistently demonstrated entrepreneurship and HP are very proud to present him with this award.”
The ambitious graduate is also a keen traveller. He has visited 29 countries, and once spent two months hitch-hiking from Tallinn to Traifa, in Southern Spain, with just his guitar and a backpack.
Sander was supported at his graduation by his brother Sten.
