Non-repayable Financial Support
Local Authority
Grant
(non-repayable but means-tested on household
income)
Full-time students can apply, through their
Local Education Authority for the Higher Education Maintenance
Grant (HEMG) of up to £2,906 which is means-tested on household
income.
Department of Health
Grant
(non-repayable and NOT means-tested)
The Department of Health will also pay a
non-means-tested bursary of up to £4,575 to students who meet their
residency requirements (for students from England and Wales
only).
Unfortunately, students from Scotland,
Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland cannot receive the
bursary. Those students need to be studying in their home
region to receive a bursary from the Social Care Council in their
area.
Loans and Tuition
Fees
(Loans are re-payable after graduation when the
student is earning over £15,000)
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees for 2010/11 will be £3,290 per
year of the course. Students will be expected to pay tuition
fees but can apply to their local authority for a tuition fees
loan to cover the cost.
Maintenance Loan
Students can apply for a maintenance loan (for cover living
costs) of up to £4,950 if living away from home (and up to £3,838
if living in the parental home). Social Work students are
automatically entitled to at least 72 per cent of the
above figures, with any additional monies loaned being subject to
means-testing.
These loans do not have to be repaid until students are in
employment and earning above £15,000 per year.
Bucks New University Bursary
We believe that the student experience is
paramount and we are working together with our Students’ Union to
deliver a student experience like no other.
This unique offer means that, in addition to
any social work-related bursary awarded by the Department of
Health, all full-time undergraduate students paying (or having paid
for them) the full tuition fee, will receive £500 cash each
year.
This is a non-means-tested cash bursary
payment transferred directly into your student bank account. In
addition, the University is investing a further £1 million per year
to help you achieve the best possible degree award, improve your
employability and provide a truly fulfilling university
experience.
Additional support is available from your
Local Authority as follows:
Parents’ Learning
Allowance
(for students with children)
This is means-tested upon household
income. The maximum amount available is £1,508.
Childcare Grant
(for
students with children)
This is means-tested on household
income. 85 per cent is paid on your behalf. Allowances
for one child is £175 per week (85 per cent is !148.75), two
or more children £300 per week (85 per cent is £255).
Adult Dependants’
Grant
(for students wih adult dependants)
Means-tested on household income. The
maximum available is £2,642.
Disabled Students’ Allowances
(DSAs)
For students with a disability or specific
learning difficulty to help towards extra costs, eg
non-medical helper, specialist equipment or extra travel costs
etc.
EU Students
EU students will be charged a fee of £3,290
per year. They can apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £3,290
which is non-means-tested.
EU students are not eligible for
the bursary or maintenance loan but are eligible for the
Bucks New University bursary.
